Veterinarians in Arab: Dr. Brown

J. Michael Brown, DVM

Dr. J. Michael Brown assumed the leadership role of Arab Veterinary Hospital just prior to graduating from Auburn University in 1983. He has long considered this decision a privilege and opportunity of a lifetime. Practicing veterinary medicine in this small conservative town for more than three decades has given Dr. Brown satisfaction, purpose, and frankly, more entertainment than any one person should ever enjoy.

Through the years, this practice has prospered, all the while embracing current advancements in the field. Great strides in technology and technique have given rise to the private practitioner’s amazing opportunities to advance in general practice, but Dr. Brown has been able to consistently remain grounded in his true practice philosophy. He will be quick to say that the art of practicing quality veterinary medicine and surgery is not about raw numbers, data, and target milestones, but rather it is the art of understanding one’s place. He fully understands this profession is merely the conduit through which he is able to forge lasting and meaningful relationships with clients who become friends. He will also tell you veterinary medicine is a really fun-filled, fast-paced, challenging occupation but ultimately it is the friendships, old and new, that bring the most joy and offer the greatest reward.

Jonathan Zeiger, DVM

As an Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Jon Zeiger has been with Arab Veterinary Hospital for many years.  He started in 1985 after earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Auburn University that same year.  Convinced that veterinary medicine was the avenue through which he could best serve God, Dr. Zeiger and his family moved to Southeast Asia in 1995 to help poor farmers grow better crops and establish healthier lifestyles.  While there, he worked primarily with goats and dogs, but he did help the occasional water buffalo.  The hunting dog breeding program on their Asian farm became a family activity, and the cleaned dining table occasionally served as an operating room with his wife (a RN) and four children as helpful veterinary technicians.

After fifteen wonderful years in Asia, Dr. Zeiger rejoined the AVH team in 2011.  Recognizing that God cares for us and entrusted the care for all His creation to us, Dr. Zeiger draws passion and conviction in his career from Proverbs 12:10: “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.”

Jarrod Harney, DVM

Dr. Jarrod Harney joined Arab Veterinary Hospital in 2017.   He is a graduate of Mississippi State University (MSU) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal and Dairy Sciences and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.  Dr. Harney enjoys working with both large and small animals.  He is especially interested in large and small animal reproduction and equine medicine.

Dr. Harney is originally from Decatur, AL. He met his wife, Katherine, while at MSU and they have two children, Cooper and Blakely.  They also have two spirited Boykin Spaniels named Wheeler and Flint.

In his free time Dr. Harney enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and training retrievers.  He and his family are active members of Arab First Baptist Church.

"The doctors and staff at AVH are phenomenal! They have shown the utmost care for my animals as well as my family. I couldn’t ask for my dogs and cats to be in any better care than they have provided for years. Highly, highly recommend!" - Chris H.

"Can't begin to say how awesome everyone is. So amazing. ALL staff was fantastic. They love your dog too! The doctors are incredible and gave my dog a new life. They are always there when you call and I thank you all so much." - Elizabeth H.

"Took my goat in for an exam. Dr. Harney took his time and held a real conversion with me about his health. I feel some doctors just scan over your animal then tell you do this thing. But Dr. Harney took time to go over options and testing and treatments. 10/10 will recommend." - Elise R.

"The place is gorgeous! I could hang out on their porch swings all afternoon, but the love and care of the staff far exceed all of their beautiful decor and furnishings! We love the Browns!" - Melissa C.

"Excellent facility, excellent Veterinarians and staff. I would not take my pets to any other veterinary practice. Thank you Dr. Brown and Dr. Zeiger and everyone at Arab Veterinary Hospital for making a trip to the vet both informative and friendly!" - Charlie H.

"We brought our dachshund Emily in just before New Year’s for emergency care because she was unable to move her left side.  Dr. Zeiger helped guide us in choosing an appropriate medical plan and a therapeutic response interval.  The third day, we began to see the improvement he had hoped for.  She continues to improve and now only has a slight limp.  I want to thank him for his insightful care and compassion during a difficult time for our family.  His love for animals was evident that day and very much appreciated.  We are so very thankful he was available." - Nikki B
